BeUNatural Shark Tank India: ₹60 Lakhs Ask for Affordable Salon Chain

Pitch Introduction

The BeUNatural Shark Tank India pitch featured founder Deepak Sharma, who entered the tank with a mission to democratize premium salon services. Coming from a lower-middle-class background, Deepak shared a moving story about being intimidated by high salon prices in his youth, which eventually led him to create a brand that makes luxury hair treatments accessible to everyone. He presented a business model that challenges the high-pricing norms of the Indian beauty industry, offering services like hair smoothing at a fraction of the market rate.

Seeking an investment of ₹60 Lakhs for 2.5% equity, Deepak valued his company at ₹24 Crores. With six operational salons across five cities and a projected yearly revenue of ₹4 Crores, the pitch immediately caught the attention of the Sharks. However, the core of the discussion revolved around how a business offering such low prices could maintain profitability and scale into a national chain.

Business Overview

BeUNatural operates as a value-driven salon chain that focuses on high-frequency, high-demand beauty services. The brand identifies a massive gap in the Indian market between unorganized local barbers and ultra-expensive luxury chains. By optimizing operational costs and manufacturing their own professional hair care products under the brand Aagami Professional, BeUNatural manages to offer premium treatments at highly competitive price points.

The business model relies heavily on volume and membership loyalty. For instance, while a standard smoothing treatment might cost ₹8,000 in a high-end metro salon, BeUNatural offers it for ₹999 for any hair length. This aggressive pricing strategy is designed to drive footfall and convert one-time visitors into long-term members who benefit from even steeper discounts on basic grooming services like waxing and threading.

Product Details

The primary service offering includes hair smoothing, Botox hair treatments, and Keratin treatments. A key differentiator for BeUNatural is their vertical integration; they manufacture their own chemical treatments and retail products. The Aagami Professional line includes specialized shampoos, conditioners, and Keratin kits that are used exclusively in their salons to maintain quality control and significantly reduce the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS).

Market Position

BeUNatural positions itself as an “Affordable Premium” destination. They target the burgeoning middle class in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, and Kanpur. Unlike luxury chains that spend heavily on opulent interiors and prime real estate, BeUNatural focuses on “decent” aesthetics and efficient space utilization, allowing them to keep rentals manageable (around ₹2 Lakhs per month for a mall-based outlet) while delivering a high-quality service experience.

About Founder’s

Deepak Sharma’s journey is a classic tale of grit and professional evolution. He started his career in 2005 as a waiter in the hospitality industry after completing a hotel management course. Over 15 years, he rose through the ranks to become the Training Head at Marriott Hotels before venturing into entrepreneurship. His deep-rooted understanding of service standards and human resource management is the backbone of BeUNatural’s operations.

  • Started career as a waiter in 2005 after hotel management.
  • Formerly worked as the Training Head at Marriott Hotels.
  • Opened the first BeUNatural salon on November 1, 2015.
  • Claims zero attrition in an industry known for high staff turnover.

Shark’s and Founder’s QnA

Is it actually affordable to charge ₹8,000 for hair smoothing?
I ask you the same question. In our country, the definition of affordable is often misused. At BeUNatural, we do smoothing for just ₹999 for any length, and we even provide free shampoo and conditioner. We want to make these premium services available to the middle class who are often scared away by high prices.

How can you use quality products at such low prices?
A bottle of high-end Keratin in the market costs around ₹8,000 and provides roughly 30 services. That means the product cost per service is only about ₹260. The reason others charge so much is due to high real estate costs and massive service experience overheads. We manufacture our own products under Aagami Professional, which saves us even more on margins.

How does a ₹49 waxing service make business sense?
The ₹49 price point is for our members. It is not meant to be a huge profit center on its own. It ensures that the customer comes to us every single month for their basic needs. Once they are in the salon, they often opt for other higher-margin services. It is about building a recurring relationship.

What is your attrition rate? This industry has very high staff turnover.
My attrition is zero. I don’t just hire workers; I train them and treat them with emotional care. We run programs for children from underprivileged sections, teaching them for free and giving a stipend. If I provide culture and love, they stay. I have built a succession planning management system where I focus on skilled labor rather than just ‘educated’ staff who might leave for a slightly higher salary.

Why is your product brand named Aagami and not BeUNatural?
Aagami is named after my children—August and Miraya. I believe that a salon product brand needs its own identity. It is easier to sell a professional brand like Aagami to other salons (B2B) if it isn’t directly branded with the name of a competing salon chain.

What are your financial numbers for one outlet?
In a good month, an outlet can do ₹10 Lakhs to ₹12 Lakhs in revenue. In Vaishali, for example, our rent is ₹2 Lakhs, salaries are about ₹1.5 Lakhs, and product costs are around ₹2 Lakhs. After all expenses including GST, we are left with a net profit of around ₹3 Lakhs to ₹4 Lakhs from that single unit.

    Business Potential and TAM

The beauty and salon market in India is a massive, high-growth sector. The salon industry in India was valued at approximately $3.5 Billion in 2022 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 10%. BeUNatural targets the vast unorganized segment, which accounts for nearly 80% of the total market. By offering a standardized, branded experience at unorganized prices, the business has the potential to tap into millions of middle-class consumers who currently avoid high-end chains due to price sensitivity.

    Market Size Analysis

The Indian grooming market is shifting from basic hygiene to functional beauty and wellness. With a total addressable market (TAM) of over ₹50,000 Crores, the opportunity for a value-based chain is significant. The rise of Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where disposable income is increasing but luxury options are limited, provides a fertile ground for BeUNatural’s expansion strategy.

    Growth Opportunities

    • Expansion into 100+ cities using a FOCO (Franchise Owned Company Operated) model to maintain quality.
    • Scaling the B2B sales of Aagami Professional products to other independent salons.
    • Introducing a digital booking and loyalty app to increase customer lifetime value.
    • Expanding into high-demand adjacent services like bridal makeup and advanced skin treatments.

    Marketing and Distribution Strategy

BeUNatural relies on a mix of local hyper-targeting and digital visibility. Being situated in malls and high-street locations provides organic footfall, while aggressive pricing acts as the primary hook. Their marketing revolves around the “Price-Value” proposition, often showcased through Google Reviews where they boast high ratings across their outlets.

    Customer Acquisition

The brand acquires customers primarily through Google Search and Maps optimization. With over 5,000 reviews, they maintain high credibility. Their CAC is kept low by leveraging the ₹49 membership hook, which brings in customers who then spread the word through word-of-mouth, the most powerful marketing tool in the salon industry.

    Distribution Channels

    • Company-owned physical salon outlets in high-traffic malls.
    • Direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales of hair care kits within the salons.
    • B2B distribution of Aagami Professional products to partner salons.
    • Local digital marketing through Facebook and Instagram ads targeted at specific pin codes.

    Social Media and Content Strategy

The brand focuses on transformation content—showing “Before and After” videos of hair smoothing and Botox treatments. By highlighting the premium results achieved at a budget price, they create viral potential among middle-class viewers looking for affordable luxury.

    BeUNatural Shark Tank Deal Outcome

Despite the founder’s infectious energy and solid profitability, BeUNatural did not secure a deal on Shark Tank India. The Sharks were impressed with Deepak’s journey from a waiter to a successful entrepreneur, but they had significant concerns regarding the scalability of the business model and the ability to provide an exit for investors.

Namita ThaparOut. Appreciated the profit but saw it as a lifestyle business.

    Business Analysis & Lessons

BeUNatural is a classic example of a Cash Cow business that thrives on operational excellence and founder-led grit. Deepak Sharma’s ability to maintain high net margins (25%) in a service industry is remarkable. However, the pitch highlighted the disconnect between a “good business” and an “investable startup.” While the business makes money, the Sharks felt it lacked the disruptive tech or massive scale potential required for a high-multiple exit.

The founder’s claim of zero attrition was a point of debate. In an industry where staff often leave to start their own local shops, Deepak’s focus on “culture and love” was seen as both a strength and a potential bottleneck. If the business relies too heavily on the founder’s personal emotional connection with the staff, it becomes incredibly difficult to scale to 500 or 1,000 outlets.

    Key Takeaways

    • Vertical Integration: Manufacturing in-house products (Aagami) is a masterstroke for controlling service costs and increasing margins.
    • Pricing as a Moat: Offering smoothing at ₹999 creates a barrier for competitors who have higher overheads and cannot match the price.
    • The Equity vs. Debt Dilemma: For profitable, local-centric businesses, debt is often better than equity to avoid over-valuation and exit pressure.
    • Operational Discipline: Success in services depends on training, succession planning, and strict quality control at the unit level.

    Pitch Conclusion

BeUNatural stands as a testament to the fact that you don’t always need an investor to build a profitable, multimillion-rupee company. Deepak Sharma’s mastery over his numbers and his focus on the middle-class segment make BeUNatural a formidable player in the regional salon market.
