Erotissch Shark Tank India: Agra Sisters Pitch Inclusive Beachwear Brand

Pitch Introduction

The Erotissch Shark Tank India pitch brought a fresh perspective to the intimate wear and beachwear category in Season 3. Founders Aayushi Agarwal and Anushka Agarwal, sisters from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, presented their brand that aims to liberate Indian women through fashion. Launched in 2019, the brand focuses on solving the discomfort and lack of options in the Indian lingerie and swimwear market, particularly for plus-size women.

During their appearance in Season 3, Episode 34, the duo sought an investment of ₹75 Lakhs for 3% equity, valuing their startup at ₹25 Crores. The pitch stood out due to the founders’ transparency about their mission to break societal taboos and their impressive traction on major marketplaces like Myntra and Nykaa. While the lingerie market is highly competitive, Erotissch carved a niche by focusing on quirky designs and inclusive fits tailored for the Indian physique.

Business Overview

Erotissch is a Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) brand specializing in women’s intimate wear, loungewear, and high-fashion beachwear. The business was born out of Aayushi’s personal struggle with finding comfortable and well-fitted lingerie during her teenage years in India. By combining technical expertise in knitwear design with a deep understanding of the Indian consumer, the sisters built a manufacturing unit in Noida to control quality and design cycles.

The brand’s primary differentiator is its focus on the ‘unorganized’ beachwear segment. While many global brands offer swimwear, they often fail to account for the diverse body types of Indian women. Erotissch fills this gap by offering plus-size friendly designs that are both functional and attractive. Their product range includes everything from basic bras to premium printed monokinis and resort wear, catering to women who want to feel confident during vacations and in their daily lives.

Product Details

The Erotissch product catalog features over 50 SKUs across three primary categories: Lingerie, Swimwear, and Loungewear. Their lingerie line focuses on everyday comfort with a price point ranging from ₹650 to ₹750. However, the true showstoppers are their premium beachwear sets, which feature vibrant, quirky prints and high-quality fabrics designed to withstand chlorine and salt water. Some of their premium designs retail for approximately ₹4,699, positioning them as an affordable luxury alternative to high-end designer labels.

Market Position

In the crowded eCommerce fashion landscape, Erotissch occupies a unique space between mass-market brands like Zivame and ultra-luxury designer wear like Shivan & Naresh. By offering designer-level prints and fits at a fraction of the cost, they target the growing segment of middle and upper-middle-class Indian women who are increasingly traveling to tropical destinations like the Maldives or Goa. Their presence on Myntra (where they generate 63% of their sales) gives them massive reach among fashion-forward consumers.

About Founder’s

The story of Erotissch is deeply rooted in the entrepreneurial spirit of the Agarwal sisters from Agra. Aayushi Agarwal, the elder sister, developed a passion for lingerie design after realizing the lack of education and options in the Indian market. She pursued a technical course in knitwear design and later completed a specialized certification in lingerie from London. This technical foundation allowed the duo to set up their own manufacturing unit in Noida right from the start, rather than relying solely on third-party vendors.

Anushka Agarwal, who is two and a half years younger, joined her sister to manage the business operations and branding. Despite the societal taboos surrounding the word ‘erotica’ or the category of intimate wear, the sisters remained steadfast in their vision. Interestingly, during the filming of the Erotissch Shark Tank India pitch, Anushka was just 10 days away from her wedding, highlighting her dedication to the business. According to Inc42, the brand has successfully served over 1 Lakh customers since its inception in 2019.

  • Aayushi Agarwal holds a professional certification in lingerie design from London.
  • The founders initially raised seed capital from their father, who is in the construction and consultancy business.
  • The sisters launched the brand first on AJIO in December 2019 before expanding to other platforms.
  • Anushka Agarwal manages the plus-size swimwear division, focusing on body positivity.

Shark’s and Founder’s QnA

Where did the idea for Erotissch come from?
18 years ago, I felt the need for a bra and my mom took me to a local shop where my brother had to pick one out for me. It was uncomfortable and pricked me. When I asked for more options, I was told to just wear what I had. That ignited a fire in me to do something in the lingerie industry.

You mentioned being a plus-size girl, how does that influence the brand?
I’ve always been plus-size, and I honestly believe every girl desires to wear attractive swimwear. It is very difficult to find swimwear that supports curvaceous Indian bodies. We leveraged Aayushi’s design expertise to create a range that makes women feel bold and attractive regardless of their size.

Why did you choose the name ‘Erotissch’? It seems a bit problematic for algorithms.
The name isn’t in the dictionary; we created it by stylizing ‘erotica’. It’s about celebrating women for who they are. We know people think it means something taboo, but we want to change that. You wear lingerie for yourself, not for someone else. You are fearless because you are erotic.

What are your current sales numbers and growth?
We closed the last year (2023) at ₹3.8 Crores. The year before that was ₹2.5 Crores, and the first year was ₹1.6 Crores. We are aiming to close this year at ₹4.6 Crores, which is a 50% year-on-year growth. Currently, we have minimal profits of about 1%.

Where do most of your sales come from?
Our major sales come from marketplaces. 63% of our sales are from Myntra, 17% from Nykaa, and 12% from Amazon. The remaining 8% comes from our own website and other small platforms. We stay on marketplaces to ensure brand credibility remains intact.

What is your Gross Margin and why is the profit so low?
Our Gross Margin is 63%. However, after the 12% tax, 36% marketplace commission (including logistics), 30% production cost, 9% admin cost, and 3% marketing, we are left with a 10% EBITDA and a very small net profit. We need scale to make it truly profitable.

Is beachwear a big enough market in India?
It is an unorganized category on platforms like Myntra. If you go to the Maldives today, 50% of the population is Indian, and they are all wearing beachwear. People don’t just use it for sunbathing; they wear it for tropical vacations and shacks. There is huge potential if we categorize it correctly.

Key Stats & Financials

At the time of the Erotissch Shark Tank India pitch, the company demonstrated a consistent upward trajectory in revenue. Starting with ₹1.6 Crores in their first year, they scaled to ₹3.8 Crores by 2023. While the revenue growth is steady at 50% YoY, the challenge lies in their bottom line. With a net profit of only 1%, the business is currently operating on thin margins due to heavy reliance on marketplace commissions.

  • Profit Margins: 63% Gross Margin; 1% Net Profit.
  • Valuation: Founders valued the company at ₹25 Crores.

    Business Potential and TAM

The total addressable market (TAM) for the lingerie and beachwear industry in India is experiencing a massive shift. Historically, the Indian lingerie market was dominated by unorganized local players, but it has now evolved into a ₹70,000 Crore industry. As more Indian women enter the workforce and disposable incomes rise, the demand for premium, well-fitted intimate wear and specialized vacation wear like monokinis and sarongs is skyrocketing.

The beachwear market, specifically, is growing alongside the Indian travel boom. With Indian tourists becoming the top demographic for destinations like the Maldives, Thailand, and Bali, the need for ‘Instagrammable’ resort wear is at an all-time high. Erotissch’s strategy to provide plus-size inclusivity further expands their TAM, as a significant portion of the Indian female population feels underserved by standard European or American sizing commonly found in global brands.

    Market Size Analysis

The Indian innerwear market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 11.5%, with the premium segment growing even faster. Within this, the online lingerie market is estimated to be worth over ₹5,000 Crores. Erotissch currently holds a very small market share (less than 1% on Myntra), which signifies a massive headroom for growth if they can establish a stronger D2C presence and reduce their dependence on third-party marketplace commissions.

    Growth Opportunities

    • Rebranding & Naming: Moving away from ‘Erotissch’ to a more algorithm-friendly name like ‘AOBA’ to improve social media ad performance.
    • Offline Retail: Expanding into premium multi-brand outlets (MBOs) in Tier 1 cities to reach customers who prefer touch-and-feel trials.
    • Category Expansion: Leveraging their design DNA to move into Western casual wear and activewear.
    • D2C Scaling: Investing in performance marketing to drive traffic to their website, increasing the current 8% website sales share to 30%+.

    Marketing and Distribution Strategy

Erotissch follows a marketplace-first distribution strategy. By listing on Myntra, Nykaa, and Amazon, they benefit from the massive existing traffic of these platforms. However, this comes at the cost of high commissions (36%) and a loss of direct customer data. Their marketing is largely organic, driven by the visual appeal of their quirky prints on social media platforms like Instagram.

    Customer Acquisition

The founders reported a marketing cost of only 3% of revenue, which is exceptionally low for a D2C fashion brand. This suggests that their growth has been largely driven by marketplace discovery and word-of-mouth rather than aggressive paid advertising. While this has kept them ‘minimally’ profitable, it also limits their ability to scale rapidly in a competitive environment where rivals spend 20-30% on CAC.

    Distribution Channels

    • Myntra (63%): The primary engine for sales, especially for the lingerie and beachwear categories.
    • Nykaa Fashion (17%): Targeting the premium, beauty-conscious shopper.
    • Amazon (12%): Capturing the mass-market and search-based demand for essentials.
    • D2C Website (8%): Currently a small contributor, but the focus area for future high-margin growth.

    Social Media and Content Strategy

Their content strategy focuses on body positivity. By featuring models of various sizes wearing their beachwear, they create a relatable and empowering brand image. However, as Vineeta Singh noted, their name ‘Erotissch’ often triggers shadow-banning or ad-blockage on Meta platforms due to the ‘erotica’ association, which is a significant hurdle they need to overcome through rebranding.

    Erotissch Shark Tank Deal Outcome

Despite the founders’ passion and respectable revenue of ₹3.8 Crores, Erotissch did not secure a deal on Shark Tank India. The Sharks expressed concerns regarding the brand’s positioning, the confusing name, and the lack of a clear USP in a crowded market. Anupam Mittal advised them to focus on a single category to build a unique identity, while Vineeta Singh pointed out the pricing confusion between marketplace discounts and high MRPs.

Aman GuptaOut – Business felt too early and presentation was weak.

    Erotissch Post-Show Update

Following their appearance on Shark Tank India, the brand took the Sharks’ advice seriously. According to a report by Inc42, Erotissch was selected as part of the first cohort of D2CX, an accelerator for high-potential D2C brands. The company also announced plans to rebrand itself to AOBA later in 2024 to overcome the algorithmic challenges of its original name. Furthermore, they are expanding their catalog into Western women’s wear, moving beyond just intimate and beachwear categories.

    Business Analysis & Lessons

The Erotissch Shark Tank India pitch serves as a classic case study on the importance of brand positioning. While the founders had the technical skills and the revenue to back their claims, the lack of a distinct “hero product” or a clear USP made it difficult for investors to see the potential for a 10x return. Their heavy reliance on Myntra (63%) also highlighted the vulnerability of businesses that don’t own their customer relationship.

From an entrepreneurial standpoint, the Agarwal sisters showed incredible resilience. Setting up a manufacturing unit and hitting multi-crore revenues in a ‘taboo’ category from a city like Agra is no small feat. However, the pitch also illustrated that “passion” isn’t a substitute for a robust financial model, especially when margins are being eaten away by marketplace fees and logistics.

    Key Takeaways

    • The Name Game: A brand name that hinders digital marketing (like Erotissch) can be a massive operational hurdle in the D2C space.
    • Marketplace Dependency: While platforms like Myntra provide scale, a 36% commission structure leaves very little room for profitability without massive volume.
    • Niche Focus: As Anupam Mittal suggested, dominating a small niche (like plus-size swimwear) is often better than being mediocre in a large category (like general lingerie).
    • Unit Economics Matter: High gross margins (63%) don’t guarantee success if the overheads and platform costs aren’t optimized.

    Pitch Conclusion

Erotissch’s journey on Shark Tank India was a mix of admiration for the founders’ grit and critical feedback on their business strategy. While they didn’t walk away with a cheque, the exposure and the post-show rebranding to AOBA suggest a promising future for the sisters. If they can successfully pivot their brand identity and improve their direct-to-consumer sales, they have the potential to become a significant player in India’s booming fashion industry.
