Manetain Shark Tank India: Curly Hair Brand Secures ₹75L from Aman Gupta

Pitch Introduction

Manetain Shark Tank India appearance marked a significant moment for curly-haired individuals across the country. The pitch began with a relatable story about childhood struggles with curly hair, where names like noodles, chudail, and jhadu were common mockeries that badly affected confidence. The founders highlighted that nearly 60% of people worldwide have curly, wavy, or coily hair, yet most lack information about their actual hair type or how to manage it properly.

Hinshara Habeeb and Yuba entered the tank with vibrant energy, dressed in coordinated pink outfits that immediately caught the Sharks’ attention. They introduced Manetain as a one-stop solution for hair products and accessories suitable for all hair types including straight, wavy, and curly. The founders asked for ₹75 lakh in exchange for 2.5% equity, valuing their company at ₹30 crore.

Business Overview

Manetain operates as a comprehensive hair care brand specializing in products for curly and wavy hair textures. The company addresses a massive gap in the Indian market where curly-haired individuals previously had to import expensive products from the US and UK. Their product range includes shampoos, conditioners, and specialized accessories designed following the Curly Girl Method.

The brand targets the 60% of Indians who have naturally curly to wavy hair but lack proper product knowledge and management techniques. Their unique selling proposition lies in offering international quality products manufactured locally in India at accessible price points. All products are free from sulfates, silicones, and parabens, making them water-soluble and scalp-friendly for consistent usage.

About Founder’s

Hinshara Habeeb, aged 25, hails from Kochi, Kerala, and brings a scientific approach to the business as a dentist by profession. She still manages her dental clinic for two hours every evening from 6 PM to 8 PM while dedicating her time to product formulation and ingredient research. Her background in science helps ensure that all Manetain products use the right ingredients while avoiding harmful chemicals.

Yuba, aged 36, comes from Mumbai with a commerce background and previous experience working as an Audit Assistant at Deloitte. She handles the manufacturing, dispatch, and operational aspects of the business while also managing family business responsibilities following a personal loss during COVID-19. The duo met through online curly girl community groups and discovered the Curly Girl Method book in 2016-17, which transformed their hair and inspired them to help others embrace their natural texture.

Shark’s and Founder’s QnA

When did you realize you wanted to embrace your curls instead of straightening them?
In 2016-17, we discovered the Curly Girl Method written by a stylist. That is when we learned how to actually manage our hair type. There are specific rules to follow and certain ingredients that your products must fulfill.

How do you two know each other with such a big age gap?
We met through groups in our curly girl community. Since this is an online business, we divided the work accordingly. I handle all the online parts while she manages manufacturing and dispatch from her location.

What is your educational background and expertise?
I am actually a dentist by profession, so I have a science background which helps me with formulations and understanding which ingredients to use and which to avoid. I studied B.Com and worked as an Audit Assistant at Deloitte before starting Manetain.

Did you leave your dental practice?
No, I still go to my clinic for just two hours in the evening from 6 to 8 PM. It is my own clinic. Currently, I am not working elsewhere but helping in family business while working full-time on Manetain.

How big is this curly hair market?
According to an Economic Times article from 2018, this is actually a ₹200 crore industry growing at 6% annually. Currently, it is a ₹250 to ₹300 crore industry for curly hair products only in India.

Is this market not too small?
This is incorrect data. You should say that the hair product industry is ₹15,000 crore market. If even half the people adopt this method and include women, the potential is actually a ₹5,000-6,000 crore market.

What is the price range of your products?
Our products range from ₹123 to ₹1,650. This is our best-selling conditioner product priced at ₹1,250.

What are your total sales figures?
Our net sales were ₹12 lakh last month. For FY22, we did ₹1 crore 12 lakh in sales. The average net sales for the last six months is around ₹10 lakh per month.

Break down your expenses and profit margins for us.
Between ₹3-4 lakh goes into making the products including hair products and accessories. Around ₹70,000 goes to courier and shipping, and ₹40,000 goes to Shopify store. We use an agency for social media and performance marketing which costs about ₹1.6 lakh. Staff salaries total ₹40,000 per month for two employees. Whatever money is left, we use for marketing. Our gross profit is 60-70%, and for some hair accessories, it can go up to 70%.

What is your customer acquisition cost?
Our CAC is between ₹200 to ₹250 per customer.

Where do your sales come from – website or marketplaces?
The split is roughly 60% from our own website, 30% from online marketplaces, and 10% from offline retail. On marketplaces, we sell on Amazon and other platforms which they manage very well since we onboarded them.

Can these products be used by people with straight hair too?
Actually, everyone can use these. The ingredients are clean – no sulfates, silicones, or parabens. They are water-soluble and improve scalp health with constant usage, so they are good for everyone.

Why should we invest in your company at this valuation?
When we discovered that curls are beautiful and every frizz is a curl waiting to happen, our lives changed. We want to bring this change to others’ lives too. We have built a community of 22,000 people organically over four years.

Do you think you are just doing time-pass with this business?
No, that is a harsh word. We are very committed. For four years, we have been managing this while handling other responsibilities, but our hearts are fully into Manetain.

Will you accept my offer of ₹75 lakh for 10% equity?
This is a great offer. Can we counter with 7.5%? We feel that is a fair valuation for today.

What are you thinking girls? Seven and a half or ten?
We will accept the deal at 10%. Thank you so much!

Business Potential and TAM

The curly hair care market in India presents a significant opportunity that remains largely untapped. While currently valued at around ₹200-300 crore, the potential addressable market expands dramatically when considering that nearly 60% of Indians have naturally curly or wavy hair. The global market for curly hair care products was valued at USD 2.87 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach USD 3.37 billion by 2026.

The accessories segment shows even stronger growth potential, projected to reach USD 31.6 billion by 2028 from USD 2.24 billion in 2022. Manetain is positioned to capture this growing market through education and community building, converting straightened-hair users back to their natural texture.

  • 60% of Indian population has curly to wavy hair texture
  • Lack of awareness about Curly Girl Method creates education opportunity
  • Import substitution market for expensive international brands
  • Growing trend toward natural and chemical-free beauty products
  • Community-driven marketing reduces long-term acquisition costs

Marketing and Distribution Strategy

Manetain follows a digital-first approach with 60% of sales coming through their own website, allowing higher margins and direct customer relationships. The remaining sales split between online marketplaces (30%) and select offline retail partners (10%). The brand relies heavily on community building and influencer partnerships rather than traditional advertising.

The founders identified the need for a Chief Marketing Officer to scale operations effectively, which Aman Gupta committed to helping them recruit. Their strategy focuses on educating consumers about the Curly Girl Method while expanding their SKU range beyond the current 1,500 products to become a comprehensive curly hair solution provider.

  • Direct-to-consumer website driving majority of revenue
  • Amazon and marketplace expansion for wider reach
  • Social media education content marketing strategy
  • Influencer partnerships with curly hair ambassadors
  • Community engagement through online groups and forums

Manetain Deal Outcome

After intense scrutiny regarding their pricing strategy, branding, and founder commitment, Manetain secured an investment from Aman Gupta despite three other Sharks going out. Aman defended the founders against claims of lacking commitment, sharing his own experience of consulting for other businesses while building his venture.

The final deal closed at ₹75 lakh for 10% equity, bringing the valuation down from the requested ₹30 crore to ₹7.5 crore. Aman also committed to helping the founders hire a CMO as a co-founder to strengthen their marketing capabilities and drive the brand toward profitability and scale.

Manetain Post-Show Update

Following their appearance on Shark Tank India Season 2, Manetain has continued to expand their product range and community reach. The brand now offers over 1,500 SKUs with plans for further expansion into specialized curly hair solutions. The investment from Aman Gupta provided not just capital but also strategic guidance on scaling a consumer brand in the competitive Indian beauty market.

The founders have maintained their commitment to educating the Indian market about curly hair care, working toward their goal of reaching the global curly hair community while offering complete product ranges that support curly hair care regimes without the need for expensive imports.

Business Analysis & Lessons

The Manetain pitch offers several valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs in the D2C space. First, the importance of founder storytelling and relatability – the founders personal struggles with curly hair created an immediate connection with the Sharks and audience. Second, understanding your unit economics and being prepared to defend your valuation with clear financial data.

However, the pitch also highlighted critical gaps that entrepreneurs should avoid. The branding and packaging received criticism for lacking clear value proposition visibility. The pricing strategy was questioned for being too premium for mass market penetration. Most importantly, the physical separation of co-founders raised concerns about operational efficiency and commitment.

  • Personal story connection drives investor interest
  • Know your TAM and SAM clearly to defend market size questions
  • Packaging must communicate value proposition instantly
  • Founder commitment must be visible through full-time dedication
  • Pricing strategy must balance margins with market penetration

Pitch Conclusion

Manetain’s journey from a personal hair struggle to a Shark Tank India deal demonstrates the power of solving genuine problems for underserved communities. While the founders faced criticism regarding their execution and commitment levels, Aman Gupta’s investment validated the massive potential in organizing India’s curly hair care market.

The brand stands as an inspiration for young women entrepreneurs, particularly those looking to build businesses while managing other professional commitments. With Aman Gupta’s mentorship and the ₹75 lakh investment, Manetain is positioned to scale from a niche community brand to a mainstream hair care player, proving that every frizz is indeed a curl waiting to happen.
