What inspired you to start Sock Candy?
I always ooze style from my head to my toes, but something was missing – socks. For someone like me, I see everything I wear, especially my socks, as a canvas for self-expression. I innovated on a category that has long been forgotten and created sock candy. One-of-a-kind fashion socks featuring whimsical prints, bold colors, and quirky combinations.
Can you tell us about your background?
So I am a first generation Chinese American. And I came to the US at the age of six with my single mom and my mom taught me to work hard and pursue success at all costs. I remember in middle school she sat me down very seriously and told me that if I didn’t get into a good college my life would be over. Very definitively like that is a lot of pressure and for her success meant getting a highpaying job in a very steady field. So she pushed me to go to business school.
What did your mother say when you decided to pursue fashion?
She freaked out. Freaked out. The blog was no longer a secret. I was promoting it and I started to build up a following on Instagram to over 40,000 followers. What is mom saying now? Mom is loving it. Always believing you telling mom has a Mercedes. But dad is telling everyone about it now like he just can’t stop.
What are your sales figures?
So sales year to date, it’s $826,000. Last 12 months is 1.2 million. We’re projecting to end the year at 1.4 million because Q4 is usually our Are you profitable? Yes. This year we should make 300,000. Last year we made 114,000 and last year sales was 700,000.
Have you raised any money previously?
No, we’re 100% bootstrapped.
What’s your plan for global sock domination?
So, I would love to launch a line with Target.
What is your pricing structure?
So the socks retail for $18, wholesale for $9, and the landed cost is $2.50 to $3.
What do you want to do with this company going forward?
So I definitely do not want to move away from the sock space. First of all, we are tied in with the name sock candy which is a great name means eye candy for your feet. So my vision is for us to become the category leader in fashion socks. Basically I see it as the next happy socks but for fashion socks for women. That’s what I see the company as.
